Disrespect? Or making a stand? Broncos linebacker Von Miller has ignited a firestorm of controversy after sacking Panthers quarterback Cam Newton during the performance of the National Anthem Thursday night, in what Miller calls a protest “of [Newton’s] punk-ass thinking he can get away from me.”
In a postgame interview, Miller clarified that he meant no disrespect towards the U.S. military, but felt that the National Anthem provided the perfect platform to raise awareness about Newton’s inability to perform when a 250-pound athletic freak is bearing down on him.
“I think the gesture was entirely inappropriate,” said Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, before Miller promptly sacked him as well.
Miller’s protest is already inspiring pass rushers around the league to do the same, and sources say the entire Seahawks organization plans on sacking Newton when he visits Seattle in December.
