The series opener between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues was delayed Wednesday night due to Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews getting his tongue stuck to the goal post.
It was unclear whether the tongue-post connection was made intentionally or whether the contact was incidental throughout the normal course of play. However, intention was widely suspected amongst spectators familiar with Toews’ past behavior.
“He sure got that sucker stuck on there good,” said Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville with a chuckle. “Luckily, [Jon’s mother] had a thermos of hot cocoa along with her. We used that to melt him off.”
A league official reported that this was the third tongue-post incident this season.
