Despite his team’s coming up short in the ALDS, the Red Sox’ David Ortiz, aka Big Papi, ended his career with a special send off, giving each fan a “big” nickname.
Big Papi had already gone into the clubhouse by the time the game concluded, but rushed right out telling teammates he “just needed some quiet time to come up with all the fun nicknames.”
Their team was done for the season, but no one moved from their seat. Instead they all waited patiently for Big Papi to make his way around to each one of the approximately 36,000 people in attendance.
“I’m going to call you ‘Big Jacket’, because your jacket is huge, man,” joked Papi to a man in the upper deck.
“You, you are going to be ‘Big Lady’, because you are a lady,” continued Papi.
“Thank you for coming to the game, ‘Big Seat 4 Row L’.”
“I could not have done this without you, ‘Big Facial Hair’.”
“Always believe in yourself, ‘Big Mustard Stain On T-Shirt’.
The game, which lasted roughly three hours, was extended by another 18 as Ortiz made his rounds to each person.
