After countless mispronunciations by his Milwaukee Bucks teammates, and everyone else in and around the NBA, Giannis Antetokounmpo officially changed his name to just “Brian.”
“We stressed to Gian– Genjjo– Brian that it was totally his choice whether or not to change his name,” said Bucks head coach Jason Kidd. “In the end I think he realized that nobody had time to stumble through seven syllables while running a fast break.”
The Bucks’ front office has also indicated their relief at Antetokounmpo’s decision, revealing that they pay per-letter for surnames to be included on their jerseys.
“My name has a significant meaning for myself and my family, keeping me connected both to the land of my ancestors, Nigeria, and my birthland, Greece,” said Antetokounmpo. “But you know, Brian just rolls off the tongue.”
